On Saturday Oct. 23 Pelessier Street’s Gallery 484 held an exhibit showcasing the work of Detroit-based artist Camilo Pardo.

The automotive-themed exhibit displayed printings of Pardo’s original pieces, all previously commissioned by fine-art and classic-car collectors alike.

Pardo, who worked as a chief designer at Ford for 24 years, has been part of think-tanks behind both concept cars and classics like the reemerging Ford GT.  A collector himself, Pardo pulled up to 484 in a one of a kind GT that he calls a concept piece. As people drive by the vehicle, heads pop in and out of windows like a game of Whack-a-Mole.  An obvious crowd drawer, the car’s colourway and design are as sharp as the paintings strung along the gallery wall. Pardo says that while maintaining the classic condition of these types of cars is paramount in holding their value, turning this particular GT into his own creation has given it a newfound value.

Among other values Pardo holds is the ability to maintain creativity during trying moments.  He equates this on a grander scale to cities like his Detroit and our Windsor.

“Detroit is a challenging city that has been hit hard and if you can take the pieces and make something optimistic, entertaining and pleasing then it draws interest,” says Pardo.

While the paintings depict cars on the go, the limited walking space at 484 is a base-coat of contrast.  The crowd tonight ranges from married couples looking to liven their decor to graffiti artists looking for inspiration.

“I just want to be able to be of interest and add a little bit more to what’s going on downtown Windsor. I was just happy to have the opportunity to show here, I don’t spend as much time here as I’d like to but, it would be great to add a little bit more colour and dimension to the arts and events that happen in Windsor,” says Pardo.

Pardo, whose work space (Art & Development on Woodward downtown Detroit) was once an old art-deco building and now a studio and gallery, says Windsor can be used as a delivery point for people to receive worldly art.  Local galleries like 484 can become hubs that serve as posts in that delivery process.

For those interested in seeing the pieces, they’ll remain up for sale at 484.
