Cyclists fill out surveys at the first of five free breakfasts offered by the Windsor Bicycling Committee.

Bright and early Monday morning, I took in the sunrise from City Hall, with the aroma of pancakes sizzling on the grill, a warm cup of Tim Horton’s coffee in my hand and the chatter of cyclists talking about biking in Windsor. It was near perfect.

To celebrate Bike To Work Week, the Windsor Bicycling Committee is offering free pancake breakfasts to anyone who stops in on their ride to work. The event happens all this week, with locations in each corner of the city, hopefully catering to all Windsorites.

Councilor Alan Halberstadt flips pancakes while Gord Taylor and Jason Turpin look on.

The first of five free breakfasts went well, with about 50 cyclists stopping in between 6am and 10am to City Hall. A wide range of riders visited, from factory workers on their way home from the midnight shift, to suited city workers rolling in to start their week. They all had one thing in common- an understanding of the importance of having a solid cycling infrastructure in Windsor.

The cyclists were asked to fill out a survey in exchange for a ballot. The surveys asked about basic demographics, and about cycling habits; the information gathered from these questionnaires will show the city just how many Windsorites are cycling, and what they think is important. Topping the list of concerns were bike lanes, with by-law enforcement and education of motorists also ranking high priority.

WBC member Chas Griffiths attaches reflectors to the two prize bikes.

The ballots go into a draw for a brand new bike, donated partially by Canadian Tire. One women’s bike and one men’s bike will be raffled off at 1pm on opening day of the Downtown Windsor Farmers’ Market (this Saturday).

The breakfasts continued with pancakes being served at Devonwood Conservation Area yesterday morning, where a surprising number of cyclists attended. 30 riders stopped by for breakfast and a ballot. This morning, the WBC were out east at Eastside Yoga, and tomorrow they’ll be at Xtreme Motions (3880 Tecumseh Road East), where the crew from Complete Chiropractic will be hosting. Friday, the breakfast will take place at BASF (845 Wyandotte Street West). Hot pancakes, hot coffee and fresh fruit will be served from 6am to 10am.
