Four years ago Anne Nantais’ husband died suddenly at the age of 48. Anne and her three children had their lives turned inside out in an instant. Grief and pain carried Anne into unknown territory, she was lost and there was the debilitating fear of being trapped in sorrow forever. As a child Anne remembered the calm that came with sketching. Working at Maryvale she was also aware that art was sometimes used as therapy. Using chalk, pencil, paint and paper Anne felt as if a cork had been pulled off and her emotions flowed through the colour and line of the medium. This release was powerful. Anne’s art became her ‘soul’s healing conversation. Within time words came in poetic bursts and through her own ‘exquisite grief’, Anne transformed the ‘pain of loss ‘ into ‘the gift of loss’.
