You can smell the delicious aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries as soon as you walk into Blak’s Bakery.

The small bakery, located on Langlois Avenue just off of Erie Street, has been baking natural breads, cakes, and pastries since 1918. For almost a century they’ve been baking bread in their Peterson brick hearth oven, using family recipes passed down through the generations.

Their breads are made using natural ingredients – meaning no artificial flavouring or preservatives. They have over 25 different artisan breads, such as raisin twist, egg twist, pumpkin seed, pumpernickel, and nine-grain whole wheat. Over a dozen of their breads are ryes, including Blak’s original rye, marble rye, and sour rye.

While Blak’s Bakery has several pastries and donuts available, they are most famous for their annual paczkis and have been using the same family recipe since they opened in 1918. Paczkis are a deep fried dessert with filling, originating in Poland and traditionally eaten on Fat Tuesday. This year Fat Tuesday falls on March 4th and Blak’s Bakery already has a Facebook event set up and are taking orders.

Blak’s Bakery makes beautifully decorated sugar cookies and cakes for holidays and special occasions. Cakes, cookies, and platters of delectable desserts can be pre-ordered for your next event. They also offer retail sales and supply local restaurants and banquet halls with baked goods.

Frozen food items are also available, including meat pies (big and small) and several different kinds of perogies.

Blak’s Bakery is located at 1022 Langlois Avenue and can be contacted by calling 519-253-4344. They are open Sundays and Mondays from 8am – 3pm and Tuesday through Saturday from 8am – 6pm. You can visit their webpage or Facebook page for more information and updates.
