A 12-year-old boy is in trouble after a joy ride in his teacher’s car Thursday afternoon.

Chatham-Kent police say that around 1:45pm, the youth removed a set of keys from his teacher’s purse.

They say that he didn’t know which car was hers so he hid behind a tree and watched as she approached her vehicle in the parking lot. When the teacher believed she left her keys in the classroom, she re-entered the school.

The boy then entered her car and drove away, but he was quickly stopped at the end of the street by school officials and police were called.

He was arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle.

There was no damage to the vehicle and no one was injured.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
