Windsor’s new IKEA Pick-Up and Order Point location on Walker Road officially opened Monday morning with a ribbon cutting and festivities.

The new store differs from full-sized IKEA locations including the nearest Canadian store in Burlington, and the nearest U.S. store in Canton, Michigan, by its unique order-and-pick-up format that will allow customers who have shopped online or at a full sized IKEA store to pick up their products closer to where they live.

The new location features a home furnishing inspiration area as well as stations to support customers with planning their purchases.

IKEA says customers will be able to buy services to support their purchases and sit at a computer station to browse and make online purchases from www.IKEA.ca.

Orders will include a flat $20 delivery fee.

IKEA says shoppers can also purchase from a small selection of popular furniture and home furnishing accessories that are available to take home immediately — and are not subject to the $20 shipping fee.

IKEA Canada President Stefan Sjöstrand highlighted the company’s commitment to communities like Windsor by announcing a $10,000 donation to support Windsor’s intake of Syrian refugees. Sjöstrand said the company was proud to have been able to hire 31 employees for the store, given Windsor’s high unemployment rate.

IKEA hired 31 workers for the new location, which officials say is one-tenth the size of a full-sized IKEA store.

Construction of the store was a milestone success story for a medium-sized, local construction company.

Windsor’s own STC Construction Group built the location and have built several of the new IKEA Pick-Up and Order Point stores in select cities throughout Ontario.

The new IKEA Windsor Pick-Up and Order Point is located at the former Future Shop building at 4115 Walker Road. Hours of operation are 10am to 9pm, Mondays through Fridays, 9am to 9pm, Saturdays, and 10am to 6pm on Sundays.
