Canadian Blood Services is calling on new and returning donors to book an appointment to give life before or during the Easter long weekend to ensure patients receive the blood they need.

Family commitments and social activities can make it difficult for eligible donors to find the time to give blood during a long weekend. During these periods, platelets, which are collected as part of your blood donation and have a shelf life of only five days, are a particular concern for care providers.

“Platelets are a vital blood component that help make blood clot and control bleeding,” says Michael Betel, director of donor relations. “It’s not possible for us to create a reserve of red blood cells or platelets, so the action of donors on long weekends is literally lifesaving for many patients.”

Officials say that less than 4% of eligible donors give blood each year.

During the long weekend, the Windsor Blood Donor Clinic, located at 3909 Grand Marais Road East is open on Good Friday from 8am to noon and on Easter Saturday from 8am to noon.
