Retired Chief of the Windsor Essex EMS Brian Bildfel has lost his battle with cancer.

Currant Chief Bruce Krauter issued this statement Thursday evening on Facebook:

Today Essex Windsor EMS has lost a valued, respected and honored leader and family member. Brian Bildfell, the retired Chief and the initial Director of the Land Ambulance Service in the County of Essex, ended his long battle with cancer. Surrounded by his closest friends and family, wife Gail, sons Kyle and Brett, in the serenity of Hospice of Windsor Essex County, Brian ended his battle on his terms and in comfort.

Brian, also known as Bubba, has a long history and numerous connections around Windsor, Essex County and around the Province of Ontario. Most notably as the Chief of Essex Windsor EMS, bringing four ambulance services into one and forming the basis of what the service is today. Brian has long roots in EMS, ambulance services, health care, Hospice and the future of health care in the region. Brian was the Manager of Windsor Provincial Ambulance Service, Manager of Windsor Central Ambulance Communications Centre, worked for the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care in the Emergency Health Services Branch, Long Term Care Branch and numerous other aspects. Brian continued to have EMS, paramedics and most importantly, patients as his focus and advocacy.

Brian always had a caring and compassionate heart and sat on numerous community boards, committees and working groups. Although he could not see the fruits of his labour, he was one of the first persons appointed to the Mega Hospital Steering Committee of Windsor-Essex. His thoughts and vision will continue into the future. Brian’s commitment to community was fittingly experienced by himself and his loving family. Brian was a past member of The Hospice of Windsor Essex County Board of Director, Vice President and strived for compassion, caring and comfort for the families and patients experiencing cancer.

Bubba was a true leader, mentor, friend and confidant to the entire area and especially to the members of the Essex Windsor EMS family. His infectious smile, sense of humour, knack for helping others and knowing each and every person he worked with, for or lead, is unremarkable and impossible to replicate. He has touched and directed so many in the paramedic field, that words cannot express our thanks or feelings of loss.

Brian, you will forever be missed but you will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, you have achieved more than anyone can imagine and have set the bar high. Thank you for your service, dedication, compassion and care.

– Bruce Krauter, Chief
Essex Windsor EMS
