LaSalle Recognizes Outstanding Volunteers

The Town of LaSalle is recognizing volunteers for their hard work and dedication in an annual ceremony that will be held at the end of the month.

“There are so many people in LaSalle who give of themselves to help others. We are honoured to recognize outstanding volunteers in our community,” said Crystal Meloche, Town of LaSalle Councillor. Meloche is involved in organizing the Volunteer Recognition Celebration.

The 2015 Volunteer Recognition recipients are:

Citizen of the Year – Aruna Koushik
Aruna is involved in many activities in the Essex County and Windsor communities. She is a Rotarian, volunteers with the Canadian Cancer Society, teaches local students traditional Indian dance and is involved with the South East Asian Centre and Women’s Enterprise Skills Training Centre. Aruna is a past winner of the Herb Gray Harmony Award (2012).

Young Citizen of the Year – Tejas Pandya
While maintaining a 90 plus average, Tejas volunteered for 220 hours, helping organizations like the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, Ontario 55+ Summer Games, International Children’s Games and the Rogers Cup Tennis Tournament. Tejas also excels in sports including cross country and tennis. Tejas has made tremendous contributions to Assumption College Catholic High School, and leaves a legacy of leadership and volunteerism.

Young-at-Heart Citizen of the Year – Wilma Clarke
Wilma is a member of the Altar Guild at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, and is the contact for flowers. Wilma is always full of life and smiling.

Outstanding Board Member – Jeff Kapasi
Jeff is a young adult member of the Town of LaSalle’s Accessibility Advisory Committee, and has been a member for 6 years. Jeff challenges Town of LaSalle administration to address accessibility issues, and is not afraid to contact other organizations to fight for a cause that he supports.

Outstanding Service Club Volunteer – Elvira Di Gesu-Iarusso
Elvira has been a member of the Rotary Club of LaSalle-Centennial for the last two years, and is the President Elect. Elvira launched a free Little Library at the Vollmer Complex, and worked with the Town of LaSalle to host the first outdoor movie night at the Civic Complex. Elvira has proven that she is selflessly committed to serving the club, as well as the local and international communities.

The award recipients will be acknowledged at a celebration at the LaSalle Civic Centre on Friday, September 25th.
