The Town of Essex has reduced development charges by 50% in an effort to stimulate housing starts.

At a special meeting held Tuesday, May 19, Council passed a resolution to reduce development charges for an 18-month period, starting May 20th, 2015.

“This reduction in residential development charges will capture the current building season and virtually all of 2016,” says Donna Hunter, Director of Corporate Services.

“The decision to reduce fees applies to all parts of Essex, including Essex Centre, Harrow, Colchester, and the portion of McGregor that is located within Town of Essex municipal boundaries.”

The fee for a single and semi-detached dwelling is reduced to $4,977 from $9,953 in Ward 1 (Essex Centre), to $3,646 from $7,290 in Ward 2 (former Colchester North), to $4,159 from $8,317 in Ward 3 (former Colchester South), and to $4,519 from $9,036 in Ward 4 (Harrow).

Development charges are fees paid by homebuilders to help finance new infrastructure and services associated with new development. These charges are collected when a building permit is issued for construction of a new home.
