Enwin Utilities is once again warning customers of a “threatening” phone scam from people claiming to be from the company’s billing and collection department.

The “threatening phone call” is asking customers to immediately pay their electricity bills via electronic wire transfer or a credit card. The customers are told that if they don’t make the payment, their electricity will be disconnected immediately. The caller then asks the customers to call a 1-800 number that connects them to a bogus hydro billing department.

Enwin officials say the company does not carry out collection activities in this manner and does not accept electronic wire transfers or credit card payment over the phone for overdue accounts from residential customers.

They say they always provides customers with their account details and offers multiple payment options and that customers should never provide any personal information to unknown people over the phone, including their Enwin Utilities account number.

Customers who believe they may be victims of a fraud or theft are asked to report the incident to the Financial Crimes Unit of Windsor Police Department at 519-255-6700.
