If you like snacks and barbecue, then you’ll love a new Downtown Windsor restaurant that’s set to open soon.

Snack Bar-B-Q is a new creation by restaurateur Mark Boscariol and chef Jim Renaud that pairs small plates with a great atmosphere.

“Snack Bar-B-Q will have a menu that encompasses its name – small sharing plates including some amazing sides,” says Boscariol.

Menu items are expected to include a porknado burger, a fried green tomato melt, plus share plates of blackened cauliflower, smoked tofu yakitori, and beef cheek tostada, along with chef Jim Renaud’s interpretation of Southern BBQ including ribs, drumsticks, pulled pork. Boscariol says there’s much more.

“The inspiration for our restaurant came from neighborhoods in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and all the great new neighborhood places in Toronto where we spent time at places like Electric Mud BBQ, Snackbar 416 and Barque,” he said. “While our menu is all chef Jim Renaud’s, it was the great neighborhood feel in these places. We just liked the creativity from the chefs which I think inspired Jim’s own creativity.”

“Most importantly all these places are neighborhood hubs. We’re even hoping to open for breakfast so that we become a one stop neighborhood hangout at any time of day or night. Bring your laptop or iPad as we’ve made chargers and outlets accessible everywhere.”

Boscariol says their decision to locate downtown — on Chatham Street — was simple.

“Downtown Windsor is and has always been the epicenter of the Windsor’s Core. It is the lynchpin that holds all the other neighborhoods like Walkerville, Sandwich, Via Italia, Ottawa Street together,” he said. “With the University opening up their new campus’, it is an ideal place.”

“Chatham Street should not have quieted down, it is such a great street with great walking traffic. As I’ve always said, as downtown’s future goes, so goes the future of Windsor. If Downtown doesn’t thrive, Windsor won’t either, and I always wanted to be a part of that instead of watching and cheering from the sidelines.”

As for when the new restaurant will be open?

“With an ambitious menu like we have and dialing in the smoker, opening date is not an exact science,” says Boscariol. “We hope to be open towards the end of November but no set dates. We’re ready when we’re ready and not a moment sooner.”
