A man was caught on surveillance video knocking down a tree in order to steal a metal tree grate and police say it’s not the first theft of metal around town recently.

Officers have been investigating several metal thefts since June in the areas of Howard Avenue and Tecumseh Road East, the 1500 block of Mercer Avenue, as well as Shepherd Street and Langlois Avenue.

Police believe that the metal is being converted to cash by scrapping it.

Police have released a video showing a suspect at the Windsor Medical Centre on Howard who sawed down a 20 foot fern tree in order to steal a metal landscape grate at the base of the tree. The suspect left the area and returned a while later pulling a cart with his bicycle and left soon after with the grate.

Police are asking anyone with information pertaining to theft of metal or to the identity of the suspect in the video to call.
