The Sobeys at Tecumseh Mall is set to close this September.

Staff were notified Monday of the planned closure and communications manager for Sobeys corporate Sarah Stover says the decision was hard to make.

“The decision to close a store is always a very difficult one; and by no means was this decision made lightly,” she said.

“Given the significant investments we make in our store network, we regularly review the network to ensure stores continue to produce results. As a result of this process, we decided to close this store due to consistent underperformance.”

Stover says the company will continue to operate it’s St. Clair Beach location.

“We are pleased to be a part of the Windsor community and will continue to serve customers at the store until September 6th as well as at our St. Clair Beach store at 19 Amy Croft Drive.”

Tecumseh Mall’s general manager Debra McVeety says Sobeys has been a very important part of Tecumseh Mall for many years. “As a strong community centre we are aware of the impact this will have on our customers and our retailers. News of this kind is never easy to understand and we empathize with the employees and families affected by Sobeys’ decision.”

McVeety says management remains optimistic about the shopping center. “We have been in discussions with a number of large format retailers and are completely committed to our retailers, our customers and our community.”

“We have made some very positive strides over the last few years with the addition of Smoke and Spice and the 12,000 sq ft LCBO. Our Goodlife Fitness is one of the busiest across the country and Marks Work Warehouse has just re-invested in their Tecumseh Mall location with a fresh new exterior. We’ve added Showcase and Northern Reflections to the mix and all have been very well received.”
