If you put garbage bags at the curb, be prepared, as of Canada Day, Tuesday July 1st, they will not be picked up unless they’re in a hard-sided container.

The new by-law requires that all garbage bags stored on your property or placed out for collection must be placed in a hard-sided container.

The city says there are two forms of acceptable garbage containers:

  • Metal or plastic pail – these are a maximum capacity of 125L (30 gal) with one or two handles and a removable lid;
  • Roll-out cart – these must have a lower bar 18” from the ground and an upper lift attachment 33” from the ground.

As of July 1st, any garbage bags placed at the curb will not be picked up.

The city says the new requirements are an effort by Environmental Services to eliminate a food source for urban wildlife such as rats and skunks, which can be a nuisance, and to reduce litter caused by compromised garbage bags.
