Two people were killed after an accident on the 401 Saturday afternoon.

OPP say that the two vehicle accident occurred just before 2:30pm, when for reasons unknown at this time, a tractor trailer travelling westbound on Highway 401 left the roadway, crossed the centre median and entered the eastbound lanes, striking an eastbound car near Mull Road.

The two occupants of the eastbound car were pronounced dead at the scene.

The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Marc Lafontaine and 13-year-old Alyssa Smulders both from Windsor.

The driver of the transport truck, 57-year-old Leszek Urbanik of London, was taken to hospital and has since been released.

The highway was closed in both directions for several hours as police investigated. It has since reopened.

The investigation is ongoing.
