Dead leaves blow on a maple tree in Walkerville, Friday afternoon

Strong, gusty winds have been slowly intensifying since the morning and are expected to pick up later this afternoon and overnight for much of Windsor-Essex.

Environment Canada says an intense winter storm centre over Lake Superior will blast a sharp cold front east across the regions today as the storm centre moves east.

Winds are expected to gust to 80 km/h across most of Southern Ontario and present difficult driving conditions especially for motorists on highways because of gusty cross winds.

Environment Canada says winds will ease somewhat on Saturday but falling temperatures will cause icy patches on untreated road surfaces and sidewalks.
