Chatham-Kent Police have arrested a man following a dispute in Chatham yesterday afternoon.

Police say that shortly after 12pm an officer went to an apartment complex on Taylor Avenue in regards to an unrelated matter.

While in the parking lot, the officer observed a 34-year-old man assault a 57-year-old man. The officer called out to the younger man to stop, however he yelled obscenities and walked away. The officer followed the man, and the man abruptly stopped and dropped the bag he was carrying. The man turned towards the officer with his fists and teeth clenched and reached for the officer’s firearm in an attempt to disarm him. The man was apprehended and taken into custody.

While being searched incident to arrest, the man was found to be in possession of a small double-edged dagger. The man refused to identify himself, however the officer located photo identification in his wallet.

The 34-year-old man of no fixed address has been charged with assault, assault a peace officer, disarming a peace officer and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

The man has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

The 57-year-old victim did not require medical attention.
