Windsor Police have an alleged car thief in custody after he put the vehicle in a ditch then flagged down police for help.

Just after 1:40 this morning, police were called to the 1000 block of Brock Street for a report of a stolen vehicle. The woman told them that she parked her 2005 Pontiac in front of a friend’s house at approximately 1:20am. She later looked out the window and discovered that her car was gone.

After completing a stolen vehicle report, officers began to search the area for the vehicle.

While travelling east on Russell Street, police came across vehicle in the ditch. Officers noticed the headlights were on but the vehicle was not running. As officers approached, they could see a male seated in the vehicle. As the police vehicle got closer, the male was flagging the police vehicle down for help.

As officers pulled up to the vehicle they recognized it as the same Pontiac that was recently reported stolen.

Police say the man realized that the vehicle he was flagging down was the police and attempted to flee on foot out of the ditch. Officers caught the male and placed him under arrest.

The 24-year-old suspect faces charges of theft of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property. He was later released on a promise to appear with a court date of February 20th, 2014
