A statement from Mayor Eddie Francis:

Today is a very difficult day for the citizens of the municipality of Leamington, and employees of the H. J. Heinz Company of Canada and their families.

The Heinz plant has represented more than an industry in the Municipality of Leamington. It is the centre piece of the community’s pride, innovation, and commitment to quality in their products, enduring for over 100 years.

Our thoughts are with the families affected by this announcement, who have learned of this devastating news today. On behalf of Windsor City Council and the citizens of the City of Windsor, we offer our full support as we move forward together in the next few days, weeks and months ahead.

The Municipality of Leamington, its growers and its workers can stand tall from their recognized leadership and commitment to quality in the North American agri-business market. Mayor Paterson and the citizens of Leamington can continue to count on the City of Windsor’s encouragement and support for all opportunities from which the community can build upon its deep-rooted and continuing success in our homegrown agricultural industries.
