Area of the crash as seen in Google Maps

Two police officers have been injured in a crash on the 401 in the eastbound lanes of the 401, east of Highway 77 — the Comber exit.

OPP Constable Joe Meloche says that two Chatham-Kent Police officers were conducting a traffic stop on the 401. The officers were speaking to the driver of the stopped vehicle on the shoulder of the highway, when a tractor trailer traveling east bound on the 401 slammed into the rear of the unmarked police vehicle causing extensive damage.

Detective Constable Nelson Das Neves was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He remains in hospital.

Staff Sergeant Kirk Earley was taken to an area hospital where he was treated and released.

Members of the Essex County OPP Technical Collision Investigation unit were on scene for several hours investigating the collision scene.

The OPP has charged 30-year-old Parminder Singh Dhanqa from Brampton Ontario with Careless Driving.

The 401 was re-opened early this morning.
