OPP have a suspect in custody after a very short police chase resulted in a spectacular crash in West Windsor.

Windsor Police were called to assist OPP near the Holiday Inn at the corner of Huron Church and Malden after an SUV slammed into a hydro pole around 9:45pm.

The crash knocked the pole off its foundation and sent electrified wires dangling.

Police had been searching for a suspect after a credit union was robbed at gunpoint around 3:30pm in Stroud, near Barrie.

OPP Constable Joe Meloche says officers first noticed the vehicle at Huron Church and Industrial Drive and began pursuit.

A witness told windsoriteDOTca that the suspect vehicle was heading down Huron Church on the wrong side of the road after OPP began pursuit, narrowly missing oncoming drivers, before slamming into a hydro pole.

The crash knocked out power to much of the neighbourhood.

Another witness, whose own car was narrowly missed by the speeding suspect, said the suspect ran out on foot and was caught in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn.

Police say a 54-year-old man from Innisfil was taken into custody and was charged with dangerous driving, possession of property obtained by crime and flight from police.

OPP turned the suspect over to South Simcoe Police to face charges.

Windsor Police reopened Huron Church to traffic just after midnight.
