The Windsor Essex Mobility Group, who is responsible for designing, financing, constructing and maintaining the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway over 30 years released a statement saying that they “Unequivocally Stands Behind Safety of Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway”

The statement is in reaction to an earlier released report that says the girders used in Parkway construction are not “safe and durable”.

Their full statement is below:

Safety has been, and always will be, our number one priority on all our projects. The Windsor Essex Mobility Group (WEMG) disagrees with the content of the Interim Expert Review Committee (‘the Committee’) report, but in the interests of getting this important project back online and our people back to work, consortium members have agreed in principle with the Government of Ontario to an additional set of measures concerning the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway. These will ensure that government, the local community, and future users of the Parkway, have every confidence in the project’s safety and durability.

In light of the evidence provided to the Committee – which includes independent positive expert analyses and rigorous engineering tests — WEMG does not concur with the report’s findings and disagrees with its conclusions.

However, we value the public’s trust above all else and given the importance of this project in connecting Canada to the United States, they deserve to know that critical infrastructure can withstand even the most extraordinary events. Today’s agreement means the Government and WEMG will continue working together towards a final finding on safety and durability from government, giving Ontarians the confidence they need to ensure that what we have been building, and will continue to build, is of the utmost safety, quality and durability.

The firms involved in this project have become successful by delivering high-quality, safe projects in all corners of the world and would never compromise safety.

These girders will become the gold-standard in safety and durability under even the most extreme circumstances. It is time to get back to work and we all look forward to that.
