The Saturday, the Town of Tecumseh will be hosting an 1812 Bicentennial Celebration at Lakewood Park North from 6pm to 9pm.

The War of 1812 Committee will commemorate the historical event of the First Nation confederacy under Great Leader Tecumseh Retreating along the Detroit / St. Clair waterway from Fort Malden. Tecumseh and his confederacy representing 24 first nations were key British allies who helped secure this region against American expansionism. The historical retreat of the British from Fort Malden saw them systematically burn their Fort so that the enemy could not take advantage of it. We also know that the retreat from this area lead to the battle site in Chatham Kent, known as the Battle of the Thames, where Tecumseh was killed in action (near Moraviantown) on October 5, 1813.

This celebration is one that commemorates the First Nation contribution to the war that helped define Canada as distinct from both the new “America experiment” and that of traditional British colony.

The family-friendly event will feature presentations by Tecumseh descendent Patricia Shawnoo, Can Am Friendship, Kettle & Stony Point First Nation Drum Group, Caldwell First Nation, Local Black Heritage Chairperson Glen Cook, Engaging Storyteller “Shaymus”, Windsor Canoe Club and Provincial Marine Re-enactors.

It will also feature a community bonfire, marshmallow roast and complimentary BBQ and refreshments.
