Bring the kids out this Saturday for Kids Health Day at the Windsor Health Centre, located at 1720 Howard Avenue Plaza 400.

Free vision, dental, chiropractic/spinal screenings and growth and development, nutritional and child wellness information will be provided all for free.

Event organizer Dr. Janice Bellemore says that “In my years of experience screening children’s vision at this event I have been alarmed at the number of children not receiving regular vision and eye health care. More alarming is the number of children with vision and eye health problems. On average, 30% of the children that we have screened required glasses or treatment for an eye condition. Unfortunately in some cases it is critical that these problems be detected as soon as possible in children. Conditions such as amblyopia, cased by crossed eyes, large refractive errors or eye health conditions require treatment as soon as possible to prevent blindness in on eye.”

Dr. Bellemore also has a personal story on why Kids Health Day is so important. “I had scoliosis as a child and it was not detected until I was 13 years of age. By the time I saw a specialist it was so advanced that I required to travel to London to see a more experienced surgeon. Within weeks I had spinal surgery and was in a hospital in London for two months, strapped to a striker bed and unable to move my body with the exception of my arms. With extensive physiotherapy I was able to sit and walk for up to 30 minutes a day and was sent home by ambulance in a body cast that I fashionably wore for 9 months. Had this been detected earlier a less aggressive treatment may have been possible and I would not be disabled today.”

The event runs from 11am to 2pm and will be held indoors this year.
