The cost to cross the Ambassador Bridge is going up this week.

Windsor West MP Brian Masse has penned a letter to Federal Transport Minister Lisa Raitt expressing concern that an additional toll of $0.25 will “take money out of the pockets of travelers, commuters and businesses”.

“You may be aware that the Ambassador Bridge is already the most expensive land based international crossing for cars and trucks in Ontario with toll rates roughly 30 percent higher than other comparable crossing[s] across the province.” Masse wrote, Tuesday afternoon. “I’ve received a tremendous amount of feedback from my community regarding the question of border tolls. The over-whelming sentiment expressed is cynicism with the general belief that tolls exponentially higher at the Ambassador Bridge are nothing more than basic gouging.”

Masse cited legislation in the International Bridges and Tunnels Act that allows the Minister of Transport to evaluate the alteration of tolls. In his letter he urged the Minister to respond to ensure the increase is in the best interests of citizens.

Starting Thursday August 15th, the toll will rise from $4.75 to $5 in both Canadian and American dollars for all passenger type vehicles.
