Construction got underway in the form of land clearing and staging, last week, to build a new combined school building for the Benson and Dr. H.D Taylor Public School communities.

The new school is being constructed on what was the soccer fields and playground of the existing Taylor school property facing Campbell Avenue.

The new school building has been designed by Glos Assoicates as will feature 54,190 square feet of learning space on two floors with space for 529 students. The property will also have a bus bay, kiss n’ ride area and 79 parking spaces.

The total cost of the new school is $9,988,077.

Construction is expected to take a year. Once complete, the old Taylor school will then be demolished around May or June 2014. There’s no word exactly what will happen with the old Benson building.

The new school has a working name of “Campbell Avenue School”.
