Leamington OPP are warning the public about yet another scam that has occurred in Essex County.

Earlier this month, police took a report from citizen in Leamington who had placed an ad on Kijiji looking for a house rental. Police say a response was sent back to her saying that the responder had a residence for rent in Leamington but that he was out of town at the time. Police report the responder said that he would hold the residence for her but needed proof that she had the deposit and first month’s rent.

The responder then allegedly advised her to send a Western Union transfer to someone that she trusted, such as a family member, and send the responder a copy of the receipt, as proof that she had the money to send him. She followed the instructions and two days later, was advised that the responder needed further proof and asked her to do the same thing for another amount. She complied and again, sent him the receipt.

Two days later, she noticed that money was missing from her account. Police say the responder had gone to a Western Union in Mississauga with fake ID and posed as her family member, and cashed the two amounts totalling $4000.

Police are warning the public to be wary of such scams.
