The General Manager of Transit Windsor is hoping City Council will decide tonight to approve the first step towards a smarter, location-aware bus system in the City of Windsor.

In a report to City Council, Transit Windsor’s Penny Williams asks for $1.6 million to fund the first phase of technology improvements for the bus fleet.

The funds would be used to implement an “automatic vehicle location system” which would allow for automated stop announcements, automated vehicle monitoring, real-time passenger information systems and for the technology to be expended to allow passengers to plan their trips on cellphones in such a way that riders could determine in real-time when the next bus will be at its next stop.

City Council will debate whether to move forward, tonight.
