The War of 1812 Peace Wampum Belt is located in Patterson Park

The City of Windsor and the WindsorEssex Community Foundation invite the public to celebrate Heritage Day 2013 with the unveiling of the 1812 Legacy Project, recognizing the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 on Sunday February 17th.

Local artist Justin Langlois, creator of “all we are is all we were” aims to capture the resilient and creative spirit of two communities through a recognition and reflection of our past, present and future. The work does not aim to illustrate this history, nor does it attempt to commemorate a particular instance of the War of 1812, rather, it intends to create a unique and compelling entry into the locally-informed idea of history, conflict, peace, and inclusiveness. The piece is located in Mill St. Park.

Lorraine Steele and Phil McLeod, creators of War of 1812 Peace Wampum Belt, have designed and constructed a replica of the original wampum belt through a process of industrial, ecological weaving. Refashioned wampum beads, made of 2,988 plastic water bottles filled with expandable construction foam for strength, create this free-standing sculptural replica. The War of 1812 Peace Wampum Belt is located in Patterson Park.

The War of 1812 Legacy Project was funded from the Capture Detroit 1812 grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage. The $139,300 federal grant included $25,000 for this art project.

The event takes place from 2pm to 4pm on at the Duff-Baby Interpretation Centre, 221 Mill Street.
