Windsor Police have one in custody after a drunk driver fled the scene of an accident Sunday night.

Police say they were called to Crawford and Tecumseh Road West around 6:30pm. When they arrived they found a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta with damage to its rear end. The other vehicle, a 2007 Black Dodge Charger had taken off. The driver of the Jetta told police that the fleeing driver may be impaired.

Just prior to this accident, police say that they had received a call from the public regarding this same vehicle travelling west on Tecumseh Road and Dougall swerving in and out of traffic nearly striking three cars.

A search for the vehicle began and shortly after police found it stopped near Totten and Randolph. Police approached the car and the driver, a 32-year-old male from Windsor was arrested with out incident. He is charged with impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident and dangerous driving.

Police also found open liquor in the car.

The male was brought to police headquarters where he took a breathalyzer test and blew nearly four-and-a-half times the legal limit. He was then charged with exceeding the breathalyzer.

Staff Sergeant Steve Bodri said that due to the extremely high reading the male was taken to hospital to be monitored. Police were worried that the high readings could result in the male lapsing into a coma. He was returned to police headquarters once medically cleared from the hospital and is being held so he can appear in court this morning.

The Jetta received about $2,000 dollars in damage while the suspects Charger sustained about $5,000 dollars damage to it. There were no injuries.
