A 7 day old infant and the infant’s father narrowly missed being struck by a reversing Ford Explorer in the East End Walmart parking lot yesterday afternoon, but the infant’s mother and five other parked cars weren’t so lucky.
Police say that a 42 year old man was walking in the lot in the 7100 block of Tecumseh Road East with his 35 year old wife. The man was pushing the couple’s 7 day old infant in a stroller.
The man saw a vehicle reversing out of a parking space at a high rate of speed towards the family. The man managed to run with the stroller to avoid the path of the vehicle. He was shouting at his wife to move out of the way.
Windsor Police say the woman was struck by the reversing Ford Explorer and was thrown to the ground. The vehicle continued reversing in a circular pattern and struck 5 parked vehicles in the lot before finally coming to rest.
Firefighters and EMS attended the scene and the female victim was transported to hospital. The 87 year old driver of the Explorer was not injured.
Police say the accident is still under investigation at this time. Initial damage estimates to the vehicles involved is in the $50,000 range. The struck woman suffered two sprained ankles and crapes and abrasions to her face, hands, and elbow. She was treated and released from hospital and is recovering at home.
