Essex County OPP have charged a man who shot his friend in the leg during a hunting trip on Pelee Island yesterday morning.

The incident took place early yesterday and OPP were first notified when a man walked to the Pelee Island nurse’s station with shotgun pellets in both of his legs.

OPP officers, who were already on the island since it’s hunting season, responded to the call just before 11am. The victim, an Ohio citizen, was flown to a Sandusky, Ohio hospital for treatment.

Charles Stites, also from Ohio, is charged with one count of “Careless Use of a Firearm” and is scheduled to appear in a Windsor Court on December 13th.

OPP Constable Stephanie Moniz says Stites was aiming at a pheasant, and and hit the victim instead. The victim is expected to make a successful recovery.
