Tuscarora and Dufferin (Google Earth)

Police have charged a 20-year-old with drunk driving after he hit a taxi cab and fled the scene in Downtown Windsor, early this morning.

At around 2:20am today, a minivan cab was travelling westbound on Tuscarora Street when a red Hyundai travelling southbound on Dufferin Place at a high rate of speed failed to stop for the stop sign at Tuscarora Street.

The Huyandai struck the minivan, and caused it to spin four times. The minivan came to rest in a parking lot just south of the intersection.

The Hyundai fled southbound on Dufferin Place from the scene of the accident, pursued by several citizens who witnessed the accident. The driver eventually stopped in a parking lot off of Dufferin Place, exited the vehicle, and walked away westbound on Elliott Street.

Windsor Police say their officers were on patrol in the area of Tuscarora and Ouellette and heard the accident. Upon approaching the accident scene, the officers observed the damage to the van and were told by witnesses that the suspect vehicle had fled southbound.

Officers found the vehicle driving on Dufferin Place and caught up to the driver as he walked away. The driver was arrested at the scene without incident. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage. The driver of the minivan sustained minor injuries. The driver of the Hyundai was not injured and one of the three passengers sustained minor injuries.

A 20 year old male, of Windsor, Ontario, faces charges of impaired driving, exceeding the legal limit of alcohol, and dangerous driving.
