Construction has started on building a seven-level parking garage and adjoining Innovation Centre at the University of Windsor.

Originally announced last December, preliminary work commenced on the project in May and this week construction crews began digging the building’s foundation.

The parking garage will consist of 1,055 spaces and displaces an existing Faculty and Staff parking lot. Two separate buildings will be constructed as part of the complex and will be connected by a second-storey pedestrian bridge from the Innovation Centre to the parking structure.

The Innovation Centre will front Wyandotte West and will become the new home of Campus Community Police, Parking Services and other campus services. The University plans to centralized some of the existing surface lots on campus into the new parking structure.

The new parking garage will add approximately 300 spaces to campus and will bring the total amount of parking spots available up to 3,000. Both buildings are planned to be completed by this time next year.

This is yet another waste of money the U of W can’t afford. Parking garages cost a lot of money to build and to maintain compared to flat lots. The University has plenty of real estate for flat lots, especially after tearing down old buildings, but chooses to embark on yet another redundant and high cost project. Unfortunately, the current administration will be long gone by the time the s@!t hits the fan…so to speak…
