After years of studies, talking, and anxious waiting from communities and governments on both sides of the Detroit River, today Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Republican Governor of Michigan Rick Snyder announced that a deal has been struck to build a second border crossing between Windsor and Detroit.

Harper is calling it “the single most important piece of national or international infrastructure that this government will complete while [he] is Prime Minister”. As such, the Canadian Government will be advancing the Michigan portion of funds for the project, and plans to fight any opposition they may come up against.

Joining them in the announcement of the new border crossing were Ontario Premiere Dalton McGuinty, Canadian Minister of Transport Denis Lebel, United States Secretary of Transport Ray Lahood, and Essex MP Jeff Watson, who MC’d the event. Everyone spoke of all the hard work that went into making this deal a reality, and their excitement to see the project begin. There was much talk of friendship between the two countries, and the effect, both short and long-term, this new border crossing will have on both economies.

Currently, over 8 000 trucks cross the Ambassador Bridge per day, making it the biggest border crossing between the two countries. As it is currently unable to effectively process this type of traffic, this second bridge is hoping to increase traffic flow, effectively allowing more business to be done every day, increasing the number of trade related jobs on both sides.
