Windsor’s Music Scene on a Friday Night

Hello time traveller!!
This article is 4366 days old.
The information listed below is likely outdated and has been preserved for archival purposes.

I was able to spend another night wandering through the music venues of downtown Windsor, and, as always, I came across quite a few interesting things.

One that I found most difficult to wrap my head around was metal bands at FM Lounge (156 Chatham St. W.). Not that this venue does not cater to loud bands (did you catch This Is War a few weeks back?)  but bands of the sort we had last night are generally relegated to The Coach and Horses. Out of necessity, the show shifted up the stairs, giving the bands a slightly larger and less gloomy space to work in, and a shock to those passing by the large windows.

Here the crowd was first greeted by local act Weapon of Choice, a personal favourite of mine, this thrash group is quite reminiscent of Lamb of God. Made up of perfectionist musicians, their shows are generally well played and fun to watch, and this night was no exception. Mosh pits were quickly broken up by the diligent building security, but onlookers were still able to flail arms and whip hair and this thunderous band rolled through their set list.

Devilz By Definition have certainly made a name for themselves in the local scene. They are known for fast paced, tight, super energetic shows, this group of hardcore thrashers make a party out of every performance.

Also playing that night was After Ashes, a heavy prog outfit who have recently released their debut EP, Broken Culture. Their set seemed well played enough, from what I could make out, but the volume was a bit on the loud side. Not that I’m hating on loud. The whole “if it’s too loud, you’re too old” thing is true to a point, but you need to know where the line stands between awesomely-head-explosive-loud and a muddled mess. This happens often though, and I’m not picking on these guys in particular for it. The fact that they were able to sound as good as they did despite their amps being cranked well past eleven certainly says something.

D3ATHCHARGER was visiting from London, and they certainly had one of the most entertaining sets of any that night. The between song banter was nothing short of outrageous, and of the sort that I can’t repeat here. Let’s just say I wouldn’t recommend bringing the small children to one of their shows. The music though was also great. With the recent departure of a one of the band’s two guitarists, it was difficult to know what to expect from that end of things, but the guitar chugged and squealed along just fine. The entire sound was as if Lamb of God brought in Dave Mustaine for third guitar, and the guy from Nordfrost for vocals.

Over at The Room (255 Ouellette Ave.) there was a lineup of four rock bands, of which I was, regrettably, only able to catch one.Frankie Whyte and The Dead Idols are from Toronto, and most accurately described as pop-punk-rock. I had one showgoer describe their sound as “Pat Benetar covering the more girl and love related songs by The Clash,” and their style as “edgy but non threatening”. I think all that sums up the band quite well. Catchy music, played well, and with a great mix coming out the speakers.

Milk Coffee Bar (68 University Ave. W.) had an interesting lineup of various subgenres of punk.Anti-Freeze is a sort of folk-punk, Aurelia melodic-punk, State of Us pop-punk, We Can Be Heroes dancey-pop-punk, and No Clue turn-the-suck-down-punk. Actually, that last trio happened to play their final show last night. It was also their first show in about a year. But not to fret! No Clue is basically EVL except with the vocalist now on the drums. They even play EVL tunes!

So this just goes to show; next time you’re bored on a Friday night, head downtown and peruse the music venues, there is a lot of neat stuff to be heard.

And of course, feel free to check out more photos here.
