Hello time traveller!!

To help them celebrate their 25th anniversary, Windsor post-punk group Lost Patrol packed the FM Lounge (156 Chatham St. W, Main Level) with eager music fans.

Formed in the mid-80’s, this four-piece consisting of Paul Langan on bass, Dave Whitehead on guitar, Rob Mitchie on drums, and Karen Marrero doing vocals, they quickly gained momentum playing between Detroit and Montreal. With various influences being brought to the table by each member, Lost Patrol created a sound that blended garage-rock, punk, and new wave. So unique was their sound that more often than not they would be on a bill with hardcore punk acts, and still be able to wow the crowd. A huge part of the band’s draw was always their energetic live performance, and that aspect remains true even today.

Saturday night’s performance was the first time the band performed together in two years, and prior to that it had been when they broke up in 1995. So the sheer rarity of the performance was enough to bring people out, but even that wouldn’t happen if the band weren’t worth it. These guys, though, definitely were.

It was difficult to tell that the band had gone so long without playing, everyone seeming to fall into their roles effortlessly. Marrero’s vocals still hold the rich, soulful quality you’ll hear on their recordings (when you can find them), Whitehead’s guitar work still quick and snappy, while Langan’s punchy bass lines fit together perfectly with Mitchie’s brisk and dynamic drumming.

My favourite part about the performance was the perpetual smile on the faces of all the players. Clearly these are some folks who love playing music, and were simply relishing the chance to do so again.

The standing room only, diverse crowd that attended seemed entranced throughout the show, with everyone in the venue smiling nearly as much as the band, eyes riveted to the stage, clapping enthusiastically after every song.
