Hello time traveller!!

The Dominion House Tavern (3140 Sandwich St.) was packed on Sunday, April 29th for a much anticipated show. For the first time since the 90’s, and only the second time ever, Montreal death metal band Cryptopsy was in town.

Also on the bill were four talented local acts.

Up first was Nepenthe, a melodic death metal group playing their first ever show. There is some serious potential with this group, and it will be interesting to follow their progression.

Next was a local favourite, Reasons Lost. I’ve seen these guys more times than I can count, and I have yet to be disappointed, but this show was the best yet. They have always been able to deliver head-crushingly heavy tunes, like a love child between Lamb of God and The Acacia Strain, but their delivery has become quite a bit tighter.  Let’s attribute this to their time spent recording their new release, White Jacket Memoirs EP with Brett Humber at Sound Foundry Studios. Tune in to Vizionary tonight at 9 pm on CJAM 99.1 FM to hear the entire CD and an interview with the band.

Gypsy Chief Goliath is always a crowd pleaser, and last night was no exception. Crisp tones all around, with catchy rhythms and bludgeoning beats, these guys make for a great show on their own, not to mention in a lineup like the one this night. GCG is a fantastic concoction of heavy metal interleaved with southern stoner rock, making for some pretty broad appeal. Check out their first release, It’s A Walk In the Mist available through Black Vulture Records Sweden.

Windsor’s premiere thrash band, Aquila had the crowd all riled with anticipation before even starting, so it’s easy to imagine how things got when the music began. Heads, bodies, hair, and horns were flying all over the place as these guys shredded, blasted, and wailed their way through a set that ended entirely too soon. The spine-crushing weight of this band combined with their technicality and unique song arrangements make for a sound that draws metal fans like flies. These guys are currently working on new material, but in the mean time check out their first full length, Imperium.

One of the most influential metal bands ever to come out of Canada, Cryptopsy is currently on their 20th anniversary tour, and decided to make a stop in Windsor. The crowd for this one was nothing short of insane, with one the best pits I’ve seen in this city. Cryptopsy takes death metal in a direction of unharnessed brutality, experimentation, and intricacy. This is a group that will pulverize the unprepared with their growling bass tones, assaulting drum barrage,  massive, debilitating guitars, and vocals straight from a nightmare. After the release of six studio albums, these metal monsters currently have a new album in the works, a self-titled to be released later this year.

This entire show was a pretty spectacular one, from the lineup to the execution, not to mention the venue. A major thanks and congratulations to the staff of the Dominion House, Joel Shackelfort, everyone who had a hand in making the show a success, and of course, those rowdy show goers who make it all so damn exciting.
