When I Hear Music I See Colour had its opening reception last Friday, February10th displaying works on all levels of the Mackenzie Hall Cultural Centre and Common Ground Gallery. As you walk through the venue you are accompanied by music and colourful displays of art work. This year was the fifth annual showcase allowing graphic art, photography, painting, and sculpture to inspire.

As the night progressed guest speakers gathered to discuss the successful event which included singing, performing, and reading poetry.

Monty Scott, one of the many artists displaying their work shared some wisdom with us. As a freelance/graphic illustrator he doesn’t focus his attention on one form of art making in his practise he includes animating, sculpting, and all forms of painting. As an artists he states with a smile “I’m still not sure what I want to be when I grow up”. He discovered his talents at the ripe age of four and recalls a terrifying experience when he couldn’t control his creative outbursts and completely covered his bedroom walls in a Michael Jackson mural. To his surprise his mother was happy rather than horrified and claims “the way I scribbled saved me that day”. Although he excel’s in the arts Scott has been working as a welder for many years. When I ask him why he decided not to focus his profession around his art making, he answers “welding is an art form, not just anyone can do it”. He describes the most rewarding part of being an artist is “sharing your experiences and emotions through visions you create” and emphasizes the importance of “being creative whenever our social life allows it”.

For more details on the artists exhibiting in When I Hear Music I See Colour please visit their website. Also if you missed the opening as a part of the exhibit two upcoming events are featured Sunday February 12th and Friday February 17th. See it in colour, the music and visual art.
