Friday evening was a great one for music in Windsor, with three great shows going on. I managed to stumble around to two of them, and had a great time at both places.

At FM Lounge (156 Chatham St. W, Main Level)The Hypnotics were releasing the CD and vinyl editions of their new album, “Static Fuzz Radio” which has been receiving a lot of attention from college radio stations across the country.  In addition to charting on the local station, CJAM 99.1 FM, it has peaked at 11 nationally. Their inviting garage-rock is the musical fusion of brothers Mike and Dave Konstantino, and TJ Dowhaniuk. This recent sensation was recorded at Chemical Sound in Toronto. Check out the full review of the album here.

They were joined by The Nefidovs, a decidedly energetic bunch, who attract with an aggressively brassy punk tone.  Their shows never fail to induce dancing amongst the crowd, and this show was of course no exception. Playing songs from their 2011 album, “Set Faces to Stunned” they had the crowd singing and skanking along as they pushed through a set of fast and loud “doom ska”.

James O-L and The Villains have made quite the following for themselves in Windsor and beyond, and were a great way to end the show. A bit more on the mellow side, this six-piece creates an appealing mix of rock, folk, and indie, with alluring melodies and plodding rhythms.

Over at The Room (255 Ouellette Ave) The Unquiet Dead let loose their brand of folk rock on a sizeable audience. They draw from many influences, incorporating some flavours of psychedelic, blues, and gospel into their music, but there is always an undercurrent of something ethereal and forlorn.  Bringing together ten talented and experienced musicians, it’s no wonder that they can come up with such a dynamic sound that can appeal to many. The Unquiet Dead will be releasing their debut full-length on April 6th at The Capitol Theatre.
