A staple of the Windsor Arts Community turned five this week, and in celebration Villains Beastro (256 Pelissier Ave.) was packed on Thursday, January 19th.

The Harvesting the F.A.M.  Festival was first held at the CAW Centre at the University of Windsor in January of 2007. Since then it has spread to infect the downtown core of the city for ten days each autumn. Through celebrating the anniversary during the month in which it was originally held, the organizers are looking to keep the festival in the public’s conscious, and give everyone an excuse to party.

FAM Fest is the largest inter-arts festival in the city, celebrating local music, art, film, and fashion. During the event in the autumn, all shows and screenings are completely free for the public to enjoy and for artists to enter.

This year’s winter festivities boasted three instrumental bands at one of the city’s newest venues.

Learning made their debut at the 2010 FAM Fest, showcasing their brand of experimental electronic music that features one of the FAM organizers, Murad Erzinclioglu working the electronic aspects and Chris Elkjar on guitars. Their sound is mellow and psychedelic, unique in the local music community. Their next show will be at The room Nightclub (255 Ouellette Ave.) on February 3rd with The Unquiet Dead and The Swillingtones.

Red Red Run is an instrumental rock trio with an energetic and clamorous sound. Playing tracks from their 2011 release, “Rejoyce” they won over a number of people in the audience that night.

What Seas What Shores have been playing shows in the area since 2005, and it’s easy to see why they’ve been around for so long. Rock tunes that flow seamlessly into each other, between calm and soothing and jumpy and upbeat, as soon as they start playing listeners are sucked in. One audience member described their music as “the sound of driving through the country roads” and a number commented on how they are still listening to the group’s first album, “Threnodies”. To the appreciative crowd that gathered around the small stage, What Seas What Shores put on a spectacular show.
