Windsor Police have a man in custody facing a number of charges after a downtown pharmacy was robbed of a quantity of prescription drugs last night.
At 7:45 p.m. on Monday, December 19, 2011, uniformed Windsor Police Officers responded to the Shoppers Drug Mart at 600 Ouellette Ave. for a report of a man wearing a mask robbing the pharmacy.
Responding officers arrived at the parking lot of the pharmacy to see the suspect, still wearing a black mask, running through the parking lot toward Dufferin St. The suspect was carrying a black garbage bag. Officers were able to pull their vehicle alongside of the suspect and demanded that he stop running. The suspect complied and he was arrested without incident. A subsequent search of the suspect revealed a “claw hammer” located in the front pocket of his pants. Officers also located a large quantity of prescription drugs inside the plastic bag.
The investigation revealed that minutes earlier, the suspect had entered the store wearing a black balaclava, sunglasses, black gloves and proceeded directly to the pharmacy area of the store. A store employee immediately recognized this man as suspicious and called 911 to notify police. The suspect approached the pharmacy counter, brandished the claw hammer and demanded that the pharmacist open the safe containing the medication. The suspect then proceeded to place a large quantity of the medication into the bag before fleeing out the east doors of the building where he was arrested by Windsor Police officers. None of the store employees were injured during the robbery.
