Windsor Police have a man in custody facing charges after a violent robbery on the city’s west side early Wednesday morning. At 2:00 am, police responded to the area of Mill Street at Indian Street for a report of a robbery. Upon arrival, paramedics were on scene treating a 41 year old female for a laceration on the bridge of her nose.
The woman told police that she had been walking east on Mill Street toward Huron Church Road when she was approached from behind by a large black male wearing all black clothing. The female attempted to run from the male but the suspect closed in on her, wrapped a rope around her neck and choked her to unconsciousness. The victim fell to the ground which caused her injuries. Two witnesses who reside in the 700 block of Mill street had seen the suspect acting suspiciously near their house prior to this incident and had followed the suspect as he walked toward Mill Street. The two witnesses saw the suspect assault the victim from a distance and began to yell which caused the suspect to flee the area on foot eastbound across Huron Church toward the St. Denis Centre. The victim regained consciousness and advised the witnesses that the suspect had robbed her of her purse. A length of rope was lying on the ground near the victim.
More police officers arrived in the area and began to search for the suspect. At 2:23 am officers spotted a man matching the description of the suspect emerging from an area next to the University of Windsor’s Toldo Building, located on Sunset. The suspect was sweating profusely and was out of breath. The suspect was arrested without incident.
A police K9 Unit performed a track in the area and located the victim’s purse and it’s contents underneath a parked vehicle in the 800 block of Sunset Street. The victim was transported to Hotel Dieu Hospital where she was treated and released for minor non-life threatening injuries.
