Artspeak Gallery is one of the many independent spaces Windsor has to offer in terms of artistic endeavours. The main structure behind this gallery, and many other related projects, is the Arts Council – Windsor & Region. Founded in 1979, they are responsible for prominent contributions to the community, such as saving the Capitol Theatre and instituting the Windsor Endowment for the Arts grant. The general mandate of the non-for-profit traditionally translates into Artspeak Gallery, as an exhibition space for the community to engage with. Strengthening the arts and the community through leadership, education and promotion is the actual mandate of the ACWR; and it is important that these spaces thrive right in our neighbourhoods.

I spoke with the interim executive director at Artspeak, Lucy Howe, and asked a couple of questions about the organization.

Could you provide some insight about the current exhibition on display at Artspeak?

The exhibition is by Doug Bedard and is his insight on how society sees/perceives mothers and kids, and how they perceive themselves.

With the location with Artspeak being in Walkerville, does it hinder at all being away from the downtown core? Does location matter for drawing audiences to an art gallery (likewise for the ACWR)?

No the location doesn’t seem to hinder. Artspeak Gallery has been in that location for so long that people are used to it, and the ACWR makes itself readily accessible online and by hosting events in other locations. Our outreach is not hindered by location because we are always willing to come to you.

Recently, Artspeak was the host of Wide Open where one of the main goals was to attract the community into making art in the studio with the artists. How often do interactive events occur in the Artspeak gallery, and with the Arts Council of Windsor?

That exhibit was put on by a group of students from the university, the spin for that exhibit was totally outside of the ACWR. Anyone can rent the gallery and do whatever they want, we do not select nor curate the exhibits. The ACWR provides a number of interactive events in Artspeak Gallery and outside of it; such as our professional development workshop series and Think&Drink events. Lots of info on our website

The location of the Arts Council – Windsor & Region / Artspeak Gallery is at 1942 Wyandotte Street East.   They are open Monday to Friday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

The current exhibition, Love Child by Doug Bedard, is running until October 16th.
