As Tecumseh’s 36th annual Cornfest looms on the horizon, a local charity is looking for help.

Tasked with collecting admission and distributing bracelets for the event on Friday, August 26, and Saturday, August 27, The Hospice Of Windsor & Essex County is looking for a few extra bodies. With proceeds from the $5 fee going to the organization’s community-based programs, it helps in a big way.

“As with all of our fundraising efforts, money raised stays here in the community to assist our patients, families and caregivers with programs and services – so we may continue to provide them free of charge,” said The Hospice’s Public Relations/Communications Coordinator, Kathy Vincent. “It’s very important. We have to fundraise $1.4 million every year above what is offered through government grants.”

While over 100 volunteers collected admission each day last year, The Hospice is looking for 80 on Friday and Saturday in 2011. Two shifts are available (12:45-5:30 p.m. or 5:15 p.m. to 10:15 p.m.) with light snacks, refreshments and a free t-shirt given to volunteers. Anyone willing to donate their time is asked to contact Marianne Lanoue at 519-974-7100 or e-mail [email protected] for details.

Out of several proposals, The Town of Tecumseh and Cornfest committee chose The Hospice’s, which outlined how volunteers could manage admissions. After making $13,000 last year and gaining experience, the charity is more prepared than ever for the challenge.

“Based on how busy each gate was last year, we’ve made sure to double up in areas where gates were busy,” said Vincent. “We’ve removed gates that weren’t busy at all last year.”

Those interested in volunteering but unable to attend Cornfest can help in other ways. The Hospice’s Coordinator Of Volunteers, Sue McTaggart, can be contacted at 519-974-7100 for other opportunities – people looking to assist with future events are asked to contact Lanoue.

Tecumseh’s Cornfest runs from August 25-28 and will be headlined by Our Lady Peace on Saturday. Children eight and under get in free every day and more info can be found on the event’s website.
