Windsor Police have one man in custody facing charges after a number of alert citizens foiled his attempt to steal cigarettes from a near east side store last night.
At 10:10 pm Windsor Police were called to the area of Wyandotte Street East at Marentette Street for a report of a theft that had just occurred. When officers arrived they found the suspect from the theft being held down on the ground by three men at the southwest corner of the intersection.
Minutes earlier, the suspect had entered the Esso Gas Bar located in the 800 block of Wyandotte Street East, and approached the counter holding several items from the store and requested that the clerk get him a carton of cigarettes. When the clerk placed the carton of cigarettes on the counter, the suspect grabbed the carton and bolted for the door. As the suspect reached the door, a customer who had witnessed the theft grabbed on to the suspect in an attempt to detain him. The two struggled just outside the store and the witness fell to the ground.
Two other men, who had just exited the Tim Hortons store next door, saw the two men struggling and heard the witness calling for help in detaining the suspect. Both men ran to the witness’s aid. The suspect continued to kick and punch all three men as they attempted to restrain him. They were eventually able to subdue the suspect until police arrived at the scene and took the suspect into custody. The carton of cigarettes was returned to the store clerk. The original witness received some minor abrasions to his elbows but did not require medical treatment.
