WORLD REFUGEE DAY 2011 is celebrated locally, Friday, June 17th from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m at the Windsor Central Library, 850 Ouellette Avenue.

On December 4th 2000, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution, naming June 20th World Refugee Day, to bring attention to the plight of the world’s refugees and extend to them encouragement, support and respect.  In keeping with humanitarian tradition and international obligations, Canada provides protection to thousands of people each year. World Refugee Day is a time for all to recognize and appreciate the safe, friendly environment of Canada, and extend to refugees the same kindness we offer our families and friends.  This year’s World Refugee Day falls in the 60th anniversary year for UNHCR and also comes shortly ahead of the 60th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention on 28 July.

Locally, the City of Windsor has proclaimed June 20th as World Refugee Day.  UN Refugee Day is celebrated in major cities across Canada, and Windsor is proud to be a strong supporter and participant in both rebuilding the lives and futures of refugees.   Attendees at the local event will be exposed to moving, heartfelt and inspirational expressions of refugees through storytelling, poetry, dance, and music.  By gathering together to share commonalities and celebrate differences, the event serves to foster respect, understanding, and community.

Organizations/associations involved with the World Refugee Day Celebration include: Afghan Association of Windsor, AIDS Committee of Windsor, Bosnian Community of Windsor, Centre Francophone Pour Immigrants, College Boreal, Colombian Community of Windsor, Congolese Community of Windsor-Essex, El Salvador Association of Windsor, Haitian Community of Windsor, Karen Community of Windsor , Matthew House Windsor, Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County, New Canadians’ Centre of Excellence Inc. , Refugee Ministries of the Diocese of London, Windsor Public Library, Windsor Women Working With Immigrant Women, Windsor Emancipation Celebration Corp. and Windsor District Black Coalition, Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. and  YMCA of Windsor and Essex County.
