On Thursday April 14th, the punk rocked The Coach and Horses. The turnout was decent for a weeknight, and some of the bands did a fantastic job.

Windsor’s Suppressulant kicked it all off, a trio of dirty DIY punk that’s a throwback to the 80’s.  Rough, grinding, distorted, and fast; the epitome of punk and entertaining to watch.

The Rowley Estate was up next; these guys are more a jumpy and pump-up type of punk, the furthest towards the pop end of the spectrum that we had that night. A tone very much along the lines of Blurt from back in the day, but still sounding like themselves. Great stage antics make for an amusing show, as well.

Playing their second show after a strong debut, crustpunks Repetitions did even better this time than last. Keep watching this one, as they’re on the road to become a force to be reckoned with.

All the way from Boston we got Pious Dogs, traditional sounding punk. After a slow start trying to repair a broken “snayre stind” they got into the tunes. I couldn’t tell you what any of the songs were about, as the vocal style mixed with the accent made them completely unintelligible. The level of the guitars might not have helped that situation, either. Fast and grungy and tight, I wasn’t blown away, but didn’t hate it. I would see these guys again for sure, and did appreciate the chance to see them.

And finally Toronto’s The Swabs! I’ve not been so close to walking out of a show in a long while. It took six tries to start the first song before they simply gave up and moved on. Multiple times throughout the set a song would simply unravel halfway through, and then they would abandon that one as well. Every now and then things would slide into place well enough to suggest that sometimes these guys are at least mediocre on a good day. The three of them at least seemed to be having a wonderful time, which is good. As long as someone enjoyed themselves. So let’s just say that unless you are absolutely certain alcohol will improve your playing abilities, abstain until after the show. Or at least don’t drink so much that you can hardly walk.
