Dr. Alan Trenhaile will discuss the timely topic of “Rising Tides: Climate Change and the World’s Threatened Coasts” at the Earth Day Dinner this year.

Climate change is expected to raise sea levels between 0.5m and 1.5m in this century, and this may be accompanied by increases in storm frequency and intensity. About half the world’s population live in vulnerable coastal regions, and many of our great cities are located on estuaries and in other low-lying areas. The effects of rising sea levels will be acutely felt in these densely populated coastal areas, but climate change also threatens coral reefs, coastal wetlands, and other sensitive ecosystems. Halifax and other parts of Atlantic Canada , where much of the coast is subsiding, are particularly vulnerable, but other areas of Canada, including Vancouver and southwestern British Columbia,  will also be impacted by rising sea levels. In contrast, because of higher rates of evaporation, water levels in the southern Great Lakes are expected to fall, introducing a different set of environmental and political problems.

Dr. Trenhaile, the featured speaker, will discuss this important topic and how his personal research fits into the study. He is a professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Windsor, the author of over 100 research articles, has written several books including a popular textbook, and is the winner of numerous teaching and career achievement awards.

The dinner is this Wednesday at the Caboto Club. Doors open at 6:30 pm.  The cost is $35 each or $250 for a table of eight, and charitable tax receipts are available for the eligible portion of the tickets.  The dinner is an annual fund-raising event for Canada South Science City.  For more  information and to reserve tickets you can visit their website or call (519)-973-3667.
